This year, CMAC is holding a Peace Wall Art Contest in celebration of the International Day of Peace on September 21st. Our hope is to involve as many students as possible in creating a piece of art that represents their interpretation of peace just like when the students of Miller County School System helped create the mural.
We will provide coloring sheets for elementary/middle schoolers and some blank canvases for high schoolers* to serve as the base of their project, but they can use any medium they’d like to create their art. These projects may be done at school or at home, in homerooms or art classes—whatever works for your teachers and students! There will be a paint day at Cotton Hall Theater on September 5th for students that may not have access to art supplies at home.
*Interested high school students will be asked to fill out a short form describing what they want to create in order to receive a blank canvas. We will try to provide as many as possible but will have some restrictions stipulated by our grant funds. These project proposals should be submitted via Google Form as soon as possible.
We have also prepared optional mini lessons for each grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) if you would like to incorporate them into your discussions of peace in your classrooms!
One elementary/middle school winner from each school will receive an ice cream party for their class. The only exception to this will be Decatur County schools, who will have one winner chosen for the county.
One high school finalist will be chosen from each participating school, and then an overall winner will be chosen from that pool. The overall high school winner will receive a $500 scholarship, and the other high school finalists will receive $50 each.
Projects must be completed by September 8th, and winners will be announced on September 14th. Elementary and middle school submissions will be displayed at local libraries, and high school submissions will be displayed at Cotton Hall Theater throughout the month of October and then returned to your schools.
